Plant-based- really?! Tell me more!

🌿 Plant-Based - really?! Tell Me More!

Here at Joybox, we believe sustainability should feel joyful — not confusing. That’s why all of our products are 3D printed using PLA+, a tough yet eco-conscious bioplastic made from renewable, plant-based materials like cornstarch and sugarcane.

So, what does that really mean? We aren't here to greenwash you so let's break it down.

✅ What is PLA+?

PLA+ (that’s Polylactic Acid Plus) is a modern, plant-derived alternative to petroleum-based plastics. It’s:

✔️ Made from up to 80–90% renewable plant material, from renewable crops like corn

✔️ BPA-free and non-toxic

✔️ Produced with a lower carbon footprint

✔️ Designed to last — but kinder to the planet

We chose PLA+ because it strikes the perfect balance between strength and sustainability — ideal for our fidgets, dinos, bowls, and everything in between.

♻️ But will it break down in my compost bin?

Great question - and we’re all about honest answers.

While PLA is technically compostable, this only happens in commercial composting facilities with high heat and humidity. In home compost bins or landfills, PLA+ behaves more like traditional plastic and will take years to break down.

So why use it?

Because it’s still a better choice. It’s made from plants, not oil. It’s safer for your family. And it helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

🚿 Wait… if it’s plant-based, will it fall apart?

Nope! That’s the beauty of PLA+. If we used the raw, ultra-compostable kind of bioplastic, our products wouldn’t last a week in the real world. You couldn’t leave them outside overnight, toss them in the bath, or let your toddler go wild without them beginning to degrade or warp.

Our PLA+ products are made to handle everyday life — from sensory play to splashy adventures — without the wasteful impact of traditional plastic toys.

💚 Why it matters

We’re a small NZ family business that cares deeply about creating intentional, joyful products — ones that last, that feel good to gift, and that don’t cost the Earth (literally).

Choosing plant-based PLA+ is just one part of that journey.

Thanks for supporting sustainable play.
